CHRISTIAN SENIORS PRAISE SENATOR DeMINT’S SOCIAL SECURITY PROTECTION INITIATIVE

“Stop the Raid” Budget Amendment Would Halt Trust Fund Spending

Washington, DC --  The Christian Seniors Association praised a budget resolution amendment by U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) which would halt the federal government’s “raid” on Social Security surplus funds.

“Some Washington politicians have used the money hardworking Americans contribute to Social Security as sort of their own personal ATM, “said CSA Executive Director James Lafferty.  “They divert the money from Social Security to, instead, pay for wasteful earmarks or other government programs.

“That money doesn’t belong to Congress.  It belongs to this generation of American workers and those to come.

“Senator De Mint has demonstrated great courage during a time when too many members of Congress talk about Social Security, but do nothing.  The Senator from South Carolina is putting the brakes on the Congressional gravy train.”

In the last 20 years, Congress took $2 trillion from Social Security and spent it on other programs.  The Social Security Administration estimates that Congress will raid an additional $452 billion from Social Security between 2009 and 2013.  With interest, that number would be more than $1 trillion

Sen. DeMint’s amendment imposes three requirements on any legislation considered under the federal budget:

  • Social Security surpluses must be used to pay for future Social Security benefits;
  • No changes can be made to Social Security benefits for those born before January 1, 1951;
  • Begin pre-funding the Social Security system and provide workers with the benefits of savings and investment.

The Christian Seniors Association has over 300,000 members across America and is a Christian alternative to the liberal AARP.  It was founded by the Rev. Louis P. Sheldon and is a project of the Traditional Values Coalition.
